Holy Cowl!

I’ve always been a very limited knitter, only knitting what I am familiar with.  But this time, I am so glad that I decided to give a new pattern a shot!  I found this on Ravelry, and although I had to tweak the pattern slightly to get around using circular needles, it worked better than I had anticipated!!
The finished product! :)

Holy Cowl by Hilary Hunt (Originally posted on her blog:  Purls of Wisdom, although it can also be found on Ravelry.)

Materials:
2 skeins Lion Brand Nature’s Choice Organic Cotton
Size 13 circular needle; 1 stitch marker.

Cast on 62 stitches with the yarn held doubled row.
Join in the round and start this stitch pattern:

Row 1: K1 [yo, K3tog, yo, K3], repeat [ ] until the last 7 stitches yo, K3tog, yo, K4.

Row 2: Knit

Row 3: K4 [yo, K3tog, yo, K3], repeat [ ] until the last 4 stitches, yo, K3tog, yo, K1

Row 4: Knit
Knit until the cowl measures 12 inches. End with a Row 1 or Row 3. Bind off very loosely and enjoy.

Now, for those of you like me who prefer to knit with straight needles, you need to PURL the 2nd and 4th rows, rather than knit.  I forgot about this detail in the first four rows of my project, so I ended the last four rows wrong on purpose as well, to make a nice ribbing. ;)   And at the end, I could have binded off more loosely.  So learn from my mistakes! :)

I just used some different cheap yarns that I have sitting around the house, since this was an experiment.  Be sure to double your yarn, and you could use two different colors if you want a two-tone cowl like mine!  :)   At the end, when you have a big rectangular knitted piece, just use the mattress stitch to sew it up together!  As soon as I found the mattress stitch on Youtube, I knew I would never sew up a knitting project any other way. Look it up.  It’s a must-do. I think I may have to make another one of these soon, only this time I may get the correct yarn and (*gasp*) I may even use circular needles.

For all of you knitters out there, try this!!  It’s one of those amazing cowls that you just throw on and it looks great!  For all you non-knitters out there, try it!  It really is a ton of fun, and if you’re willing to keep learning new stitches and patterns, you’ll be much better than I am in no time at all. ;)
